Eureka County, Nevada is one of about 3,140 counties and county equivalents in the United States. It has 4,176 sq. miles in land area and a population density of 0.4 people per square mile. In 2003 the total population of Eureka County was estimated to be 1,513 while the population of the entire state of Nevada was estimated at 2,241,154. In the period from April 1, 2000 to July 1, 2003 its population is estimated to have changed by -8.4% while the state changed by 12.2%. Note that official recorded population counts of the 2000 census are 1,651 and 1,998,257 for the county and state respectively. In the decade prior to the last census (1990 to 2000) Eureka County's total population changed by 6.7% while Nevada changed 66.3%.

Demographics

On the 2000 census, 89.3% of the population reported to be White and 0.4% African-American. Other races tallied; Native American: 1.6%, Asian: 0.8%, and Hawaiian/Pacific Island origin: 0.1%. The Hispanic population (any origin) of Eureka County is 9.6%. 10.7% of the county's population spoke a language other than English while at home and foreign-born persons represented 7.8%. Of those that were age 25 and over at the time of the census 76.7% were high school graduates and 13.6% had a college Bachelor's degree or higher. 27.8% were under 18 years old while 12.4% were of retirement age, 65 years old and over. The number of persons reporting a disability was 344.

Eureka County had 666 households in 2000 with a median household income of $41,417 as compared to the Nevada state-wide median family income of $44,581. The average income per person was $18,629 versus Nevada's $21,989. Poverty levels for the county and state were 12.6% and 10.5%, respectively.
